Super Star Dumb
Feature length Nonfiction Narrative
Status: Post-production
LOGLINE:
The story of a man punished by his talent in a society where anything short of celebrity is failure, Super Star Dumb examines the broken promise of middle-class rock and roll stardom.
SHORT SYNOPSIS:
Award-winning filmmaker Paul Devlin’s latest work-in-progress is Super Star Dumb. This will be a feature-length, romantic musicomedy featuring the hilariously obscure band, Loaded Poets, still together 30 years after high school. Out front is the dynamic, outrageous, sin
ger / songwriter Jim Wood, a man whose charisma and sharp wit are as contagious as his music.
But what if the talent is strong, while the marketing is not. Is it still fulfilling to create new music as life marches on, the audience dwindles and the band rarely plays outside the basement anymore? As middle-age sets in and Jim and his wife Christie confront the elusiveness of fame and the challenges of starting a family, they start to wonder - when is it time to surrender your dreams?
Glen Burtnick (Styx) and Graham Maby (Joe Jackson Band), journeyman musicians in Jim’s hometown, provide insight into the realities of pop music stardom. More celebrity musicians will join the conversation as the story continues.
Paul has been following his childhood friend Jim for over 10 years, painting a poignant picture of the universal dilemmas artists and their families face as they navigate the tense territory between pursuing art and pursuing recognition. Jim is the perfect guide, inviting us into his life with intelligence and humor to discover what happens when the Rock & Roll Dream and the American Dream collide.
